Heifers and cows in the £1500’s to £1540 for Mr RH Webb’s non pedigree heifer and £1500 for a second calver from Hugh Vowles of Bristol who had others that calved in March at £1150.

Probably the dearest bullock sold so far this year at £1320 was a superbly presented 15m Limousin from Mr MR & Mrs VA Smith, Thelbridge. Top was £1348 for well grown Limousin steers (26/27m & FA) from Mr E & Mrs D Derebag, Biddisham, who sold other tremendous feeding Limousin steers at £1330 (24/26m & FA) and £1160 (22/26m & FA) Simmentals (26m & FA) at £1315 and Blues at £1155 (23/27m & FA) £1125 (19/23m & FA). Another super run of feeding steers from Messrs Habberfield & Priscott, Nunnington lit the ring at £1290 for Charolais (20m & FA) £1275 for Simmentals (17/22m & FA) Charolais again at £1265 (19/23m & FA) and £1205 (18/24m & FA) and £1200 for Limousins and Blondes (19/26m & FA) and £1180, £1170 and £1075 for mixed continentals (19/21, 19/20 and 20/24m & FA). Further good feeders at £1250 for Simmentals (24/28m & FA) from Mr AP & Mrs SM Parris & Son, Taunton who sold Simmentals at £1120 (20/24m & FA). £1235 was bid for a shapely 24m Charolais from Mr T Webber, Loxhore, who sold others at £1195 (21/25m & FA). Lean well grown Charolais steers (23/24m & FA) at £1215 from Mr KD Browse, Sampford Peverell. £1215 was also bid for a 21m Charolais (FA) from Messrs TG Lunt, Hawkchurch who sold another at £1195. Messrs S Legg & Son, Hampton returned to sell a 26m Limousin (FA) at £1190. Fleshed Blue steers (28m & FA) from Mr F & Mrs S Aplin, Buckland St Mary hit £1185.

Native steers on our monthly native sale rose to £1235 (20/28m, FA & sire) from Mr AP & Mrs SM Parris & Son, Taunton again. Further Angus at £1130 (25/26m & sires) from Mr WR & Mrs NA Rich, Colyton. Well grown Beef Shorthorn steers at £1200 (25m & FA) £1175 (24/26m & FA) and £1165 (25/26m & FA) from Exmoor Forest Farms, Simonsbath. Devons sold to £1190 (27m & FA) from Mr AP & Mrs SM Parris & Son, who sold others 26/27m and FA at £1130. Hereford steers sold to £1130 (26m) from Mr N Hawkins, Birchwood .

Dairy bred steers improved again to £1105 (25/28m & FA) Mr AP & Mrs SM Parris again. Others to £905 (26/27m & FA) from Mr RH Webb, Henley.

Heifers very firm to £1160 for a well fleshed 32m and FA Blue from Mr GW & Mrs GM Long & Son, Chardstock. Good type Charolais from Mr T Webber, Loxhore achieved £1155 (23m & FA) £1080 (25m & FA) and £1005 (23/24m & FA). £1075 was bid for a 20m and FA Charolais from Messrs TG Hunt, Hawkchurch. £1050 was achieved by Mr C Jones with a 23m and FA Limousin. Mr F & Mrs S Aplin scored again at £1045 for a 27m and FA Blue heifer. Well grown Simmentals (25/26m) from Mr RK & Mrs RA Jones, Hambrook returned at £1012 and very well fleshed Blue heifers from Mr SER Hunt, Kilve hit £1000.

Native heifers rose to £1050 for a Woodington Angus (25m & sire) offered by Mrs UM & Mr RJ Venner, Witheridge and presented by Matt Smith, who sold other purebreds (22/25m) at £975.

Prices of note were £1148 (13/15m x10 & FA) and £1115 (13/14m x4 & FA) for Farmers and Growers registered organic Charolais steers from Exmoor Forest Farms. A 15m Simmental steer from Mr MP & Mrs DM Hine, Northay hit £1085, who sold 11/13m Limousin steers (FA) at £1040. As per last week’s advice, “empty every shed and sweep every field”. Time to sell.

Lambs sold to £84.50 for a pen of Poll Dorset ewe lambs from Mrs M Barton, who also sold strong wethers to £79.50. Mixed coloured types from Mr G Humber to £118 and £116. Medium weights to £116 from Mr J Baker; £105 from Mr SJ Sibley and £100 from Messrs LE Miller & Son.

Store Pigs (157): The trade for the 157 store pigs on offer was a “tale of two halves”! Smart white pigs with shape sold readily however small or coloured pigs were much more difficult to place. A good run from Mr P Hughes realised £59 and £48. Saddlebacks to £58 from Messrs AP & PC Rose. Others to £38 from Mr P Williams.

Cull Sows & Boars (33): More culls forward at 33 head, which met a better trade for all on offer. Best large sows to £135, £130 and £127 from Messrs P & TA Reakes. Others to £126 from Messrs BS Newth & Son; £124 from Mr S Loveless; £121 from Mr DR Hutchings and £119 from Mr PE Young and Mr RJ Maltby. It was evident that flesh is wanted, fat is not. Over fat sows noticeably less than large leaner types.

Breeding Boar (1): A single young Pietrain boar sold well to £200 from Mr R Smith.

UTM (27) and OTM Prime Cattle (2): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very short entry of 29 prime cattle as Vendors race to beat the forecast and pick up grass, met another very strong trade.

Top was 214.5ppk for a smart 555kg 24m Limousin heifer from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe. Other heifers to 167.5ppk twice for an Angus (522 and 515kg & 27m) from Mr RL Kent, Walton in Gordano. A dire shortage of heifers when many more could have sold to advantage.

Steers rose to 196.5ppk for a 660kg Limousin (25m & FA) from Mr BA Sweet, Congresbury, who sold another at 183.5ppk. Further Limousin steers at 191.5ppk (29m & 660kg) from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son.
