Dairy Cattle (79): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much smaller entry saw another good trade for the best and we had plenty of good ones. Last week’s excellent top prices were not quite maintained but we still had 26% over £1600 to a top of £1880 for Mr R Webb. A run of first quality heifers from Mr HR Lewis, Carmarthen sold to £1860 x2, £1850, £1820, £1780 and £1740 to average £1818. The best average for one Vendor for 2 years. Others to £1780 for East Avercombe Farms Ltd, South Molton; £1760 Mr DE Pyle, Exeter; £1740 Mr JG Morgan, Tewkesbury; £1650 Mr MC Powell; £1640 for Messrs R Haskell & Partners, Carmarthen, also Messrs CB Powell & Son, Cheltenham, Messrs M & K Churchill & Son, Axminster and Mr PH Creed, Glastonbury.

Store Cattle, Sucklers & Stirks (1235): Store Cattle & Grazing Cows (867): For Saturday 10th September 2016:- 60 day PMT date: 12th July 2016 (count day after injection as 1 and day of sale as 60).

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a massive September entry, 32% up on last year’s at 867 head, part of 1235 with the stirks and weekly sucklers. Trade for the best still good but again many cattle showing the effects of a shortage of grass and some small for their age, which found homes at lower levels than of late.

Top was £1360 for a tremendous 33m Limousin steer (FA) from Mr GW & Mrs GW Long & Son, Chardstock, who sold other well fleshed bullocks at £1280, Blue (30m & FA) £1195, Limousin (34m & FA) £1135, Blues (31m & FA) and £1120, Blue (33m & FA). Further well fleshed steers being a 26m Simmental and a 27m Limousin (FA) from Mr AP & Mrs SM Parris, Taunton, hit £1330, who also sold a red Limousin (22m & FA) at £1160 and a further Limousin (23m & FA) at £1140. Another fleshed Limousin steer (28m and FA) from Messrs SR Bishop & Son, South Perrott at £1325. Quality feeding Limousin (U+1) at £1250 from Messrs Redwood & Son, Clayhidon. Further better type feeding Blue steers at £1190 (28/29m & FA) Mr M Naish, Kenn who sold further Blues at £1100; £1150 (20/21m & FA) Mr ARE & Mrs KA Sparks, Churchinford and £1140 (23/24m) Messrs RW Rich & Son, Yarcombe. A shapely red Limousin steer (26m & FA) from Mr R Withers, Probus hit £1180, when young (15/16m) exceptional conformation Limousins sold particularly well at £1105 from the same farm. £1155 was bid for a 22m and FA Limousin from Mr TR & Mrs RT Tilley, Penzance. Others at £1100 were well bred feeding Charolais (24m & FA) from Messrs Hutton & Sons, Hallen.

Native steers also rang the bell at £1335 for fit Angus steers (26/27m, FA & sires) from Mr CJ Chant, Bower Hinton who sold further super types at £1315 and £1310, all 26m, FA and sold with sire details. Further stronger Angus steers at £1140 (22/26m, FA & sires) and £1080 (22/24m & FA) Mr GG Dyer, Chard; £1090 (25m, FA & sire) from Mr DW Hewlett, Queen Camel and £1040 (22/25m, FA & sires) Messrs MJ Frampton & Son, Beaminster. Hereford steers topped at £1180 (28m, FA & sire) Mr M Naish, Kenn. Further stronger Hereford steers £1165 (23m) Mr GW King, Glastonbury and £1090 (24m & FA) Mr DW Hewlett again.

Dairy bred steers peaked at £900 for well grown types with big frames (23/25m & FA) from Mr ES Triggol, Bridgwater. Others £870 for Holsteins from both Mr LF & Mrs AJ Bartlett, Honiton (21m & FA) and Messrs C Kallaway & Son, Clayhidon (26/27m & FA) and £850 for Friesians from Mr TR & Mrs RT Tilly, Penzance.

Heifers sold to £1085 for a grand 34m and FA Blonde from Mr GW & Mrs GM Long & Son, Chard. An extremely well shaped Blue (U+2) from Mr R Withers, Truro hit £1075. Fed Blues from Mr RD & Mrs SA Patch, Wilmington achieved £1075 (24/25m & FA) £1045 (23m & FA) and £985 (24m & FA); £1055 (25m & FA) Messrs Johnson Partners, Chard and £1020 (23m & FA) Messrs MJ Frampton & Son again. Limousin heifers rose to £1035 for 24m and FA organic registered types from Mr NJ Cowling, Brompton Regis who sold another (27m, FA & OF&G) at £1005 and 22/24m Charolais (OF&G) at £995. The organic registered stock forward generally in great demand. Further better Charolais heifers at £990 (19m) Mr WAA Kilfedder, Tavistock.

Native heifers peaked at £1015 for an Angus (24m, FA & sire) from Mr CA & Mrs MA Ralph, Trull, who sold others (18m, FA & sire) at £970 and (22m, FA & sire) at £920. Further Angus heifer at £1000 (21m, FA & sire) Mr MJ & Mrs GA Broom, Cotleigh; £960 (29m) Mr EJ & Mrs ACM Lockyer, Aller and £918 (24/26m, FA & sire) Mr D & Mrs JM Palfrey, Morebath. A super run of young suckler bred Limousin steers from Mr P & Mrs G Ford, Nempnett Thrubwell, all 15/16m sold well at £1080 (x3) £1050 (x4) and £1048 (x7) when heifers (13/16m) from the same farm met calls of £935 (x4) and £820 (x3).

Busk Calves & Stirks (356): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report with an Autumnal feel in the air numbers begin to build. Few top quality beasts forward when a lot of older cattle made up the numbers. Top price was £1025 for an 18m Limousin steer from Mr IC Churchill of Axminster, when another from the same farm sold to £945 (12m) Limousin. Others to £860 from Messrs EJ & RJ Mills for a 10m Limousin steer and £820 for an 8m Limousin steer from Messrs D & P Pengelly. Few Charolais on show saw prices top at £790 (8m) from Ham Farm Partners, when others sold to £715 (x2) 8/9m. A smart young entry from Mr PA Cleave achieved £755 for a 9m Limousin steer and a British Blue (8m) to £745 and £735 well done.

Heifers again from Mr PA Cleave topped the market at £705 (11m) Limousin and £655. Others to £670 for a 13m Limousin from Redwood & Sons. Charolais (10m) to £645 from Ham Farm Partners and £635 (9m) from Mr B Calder.

Few native breeds on show worthy of a mention but anything young with shape fetched a premium.

British Friesians much keener, when many sold in advance of £80 to £140, Messrs AE Allen & Sons and £118 Mr DG Mogford. Good rearers generally £60-£120, mediums £30-£60, only the plain calves more selective from £10-£40.

Sheep (3613): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report the following sheep trades:-

Store Lambs (1651): A much reduced entry of 1651 store lambs sold to an equally strong trade. The best sold to £90 from Mr J Turney. Other strongest types to £88 from Mrs E Gilbert; £87.50 from Mr GT Heyward; £85 from Mr GJ Cook and Messrs J & E Nuttall; £84 from Mr D Lee. Mediums ranged £55-£68. Very small nearly all £30 plus. Overall average £57.98.

Ram Lambs sold as store lambs are to be declared. Those lots so declared to not contain any ram lambs, which are found post sale to contain undeclared ram lambs, will attract a 25% reduction in the sale price of any ram lambs found.

Grazing Ewes & Rams (1677): Yet another huge entry of 1677 grazing ewes and rams sold to a very similar trade, however a large proportion of plain ewes generally lacking condition were forward. Rams sold to £114 (x2) from Messrs G & J Chorley & Son. Others to £108.50 from Messrs Lane Bros; £106 from Mr MW Gooden; £102 from Mr M Smith. Ewes sold to £104.50 Mr CHE Kidner. Others to £98.50 from Mrs KA Hill; £98 from Messrs J Sprake & Partners; £97 from Mr OD Toogood and £96.50 from Messrs DG & RH Matravers. Mediums ranged £60-£75. Plain £45-£60. Breeding Ewes (126): A modest entry of 126 Breeding Ewes sold to a good level of interest. Suffolk Mule shearlings to £115 and £113 from Messrs EJ & RJ Mills. Charollais shearlings to £98 from Messrs G & J Chorley & Son.

Older rams to £290 for pedigree Poll Dorset from Mrs KJ Lewenden and £250 for a 6T from Mr R Hole.

Store Pigs (100): Again a shortage in numbers forward met a strong trade for all store pigs. Strong stores to £47 for Mr R Ingram. Smart 10 w/o White weaners to £38 for Mr M Ogborne. Similar types to £34 and £30 for Mr JV Tristram. Best also from RJ Construction to £33 and Messrs AR & JC Denning to £46.

Cull Sows & Boars (52): A larger entry of culls forward sold to a strong trade yet again. Best boars to £208 for Mr B Turner. Sows to £206 for Mr R Smith from Cornwall. Others to £193 and £190 for Messrs P & TA Reakes and £192 for Messrs J & R Kingdon of Newquay. Overall average £131.21.

Breeding Pigs (17): Young Pietrain breeding boar to £220 for Mr R Smith from Cornwall. Young sow + 10 sold to £310 for Mr DH Turner from Bridport.

Top was 211ppk for a top quality Limousin from Mr AL Hobbs, Minehead who sold well fleshed Charolais heifers at 198, 190.5, 190 and 188.5ppk twice and a good Angus heifer at 189.5ppk. A well fleshed and bred Limousin from Mr J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary rose to 202.5ppk. An exceptionally well muscled Blue heifer from Mr WH Amesbury & Son achieved 202ppk. 188.5ppk was also bid for a leaner, clean type Limousin from Mr GR Baker & Son, Cannington.

Steers rose to 209ppk for a top drawer Limousin from Mr J & Mrs S Vinnicombe & Son, who sold others similarly bred and fed at 205.5 and 203.5ppk. A super conformation Limousin from Mrs MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter hit 198.5ppk. A run of good Limousin and Charolais steers from Mr AJ Hepper & Son sold well at 198, 196.5, 193.5, 192.5 and 192ppk. A smart Blue steer from Messrs JS & M Frost, Weston Super Mare achieved 194.5ppk.

Steers sold to £1,417.50 for a grand 750kg Limousin from Mr AJ Hepper & Son, who sold a Charolais at £1,366.30. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a medium entry of cull cattle met a strong trade. One or two of the better meat black and whites a little full but the very plain bottom end cows much dearer, when hardly any were below 70ppk.

Top was 140.5ppk for a younger Devon cow from Washingpool Farm, Bridport, who sold other Devon cows at 129.5ppk twice and 128ppk. A grand Simmental from Messrs Adams Bros, Clayhidon hit 135.5ppk. Good Blue cow from Mr JB Clist, Cullompton at 128.5ppk.

Sucklers sold to £1109.75 for a grand 819kg Simmental from Messrs Adams Bros.

Black and whites very keenly sought to 132ppk for a young Holstein from Messrs D & A Mead & Co, Weston Super Mare, who sold another similar at 128.5ppk. Best heavier lambs were an excellent trade to £108 for a single 59kg (yellow) from Mr R Chaddock, Glastonbury. Another heavy weight single, 61kg and yellow again from Messrs House & Sons, Mosterton also broke the £100 mark at £102. A super run of yellows, 54, 52 and 51kg from Messrs J Sprake & Partners, Milborne Wick ignited the trade at £99.50, £98.50 and £90. The House’s also scored with a pen of 49kg yellows at £96 and an overfat red, 56kg at £98. Highest pence per kilo lambs at 199ppk were 43kg yellows from Mr JPT & Mrs BM Scott, Elworthy (£85.50). Others yellows 196ppk (49kg) Messrs House & Sons, Beaminster; 194 thrice (41 & 45kg x2) and 193ppk twice, Wallmead Farms, Timsbury; 194ppk again (41kg) Mrs LM Walters, Langport; 192ppk (45kg) Mr JD Barnard, Stallbridge; 192ppk (48kg) Mr FE Tucker, South Molton; 190ppk (49kg) Mr AR Parsons, Draycott; 190ppk again twice (45kg) Lane Bros, Hinton St George and 190ppk again, Mr PH & Mrs ME Buckingham & Son, Dulverton.

The leaner end of the Blue graded lambs were hard to place, particularly if under 42kg. Several sub £70 per head, which if kept and fed would provide a better return as 45kg yellow graded lambs were £85 plus. Three kilos of finish producing potentially £15. Overall average, including under and over finished rejects £79.35.
