AN 18th Century Donyatt pottery puzzle jug will be among the varied lots of ceramics coming under the hammer at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s next antique sale, today on Thursday, October 6.

Records show that there have been potteries in the Donyatt and Horton area of the county since the 13th Century and this particular piece is finished in the mottled yellow-green glaze that is typical of wares produced from the local clays. Dated 1795, it has sgraffito decoration and carries the simple but profound motto ‘Gift is small, goodwill is all’. The pre-sale estimate for this historically important jug is £200-£300.

Also featuring in the sale are two Royal Worcester blush ivory jugs, a Royal Worcester dinner service in the perennially popular ‘Evesham’ pattern (£70-£90), and a stylish Goldscheider figure of a young lady in peasant dress (£80-£120). Doulton, Moorcroft, Lladro , Beswick and Portmeirion are also represented, and all can be found in the illustrated on-line catalogue.
