Dairy Cattle (96): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a much larger entry of dairy cattle saw a more selective trade, when few wanted the second quality. The top end also saw a drop in the trade and they looked good value for money. Overall “power is king”.

The top prices were dominated by Yarcombe Young Farmers Annual Show & Sale, which comprised an excellent quality entry. Paul Doble took the Championship as well as the top call, being £265 (£94.64/life) for 5 ewes with 9 lambs. Generally a good show of cattle rose to 218.5ppk for an exceptional conformation, red, home bred, Limousin steer (546kg) from Messrs J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Exeter, who sold another steer very similar (572kg) at 217ppk. An exceptional run of home bred, young continental steers from Mr KJ & Mrs S Bishop, Bridgwater hit 211.5ppk (578kg) 210ppk (528kg) 207ppk (587kg) and 206.5ppk twice (608 & 544kg). Another run of excellent home bred Limousin steers, this time from Messrs J & DJ Cotterill, Monksilver peaked at 205ppk (550kg) when another achieved 204.5ppk (504kg).

Far too few on offer to satisfy demand. 6 best cows averaged 156ppk to 173.5ppk for a quality pure Limousin from Mrs M Forward, Exeter, who sold another at 160.5ppk. 13 good meat cows averaged 135ppk. 19 steakers 125ppk and only really plain cows were below 100ppk. A run of sucklers from Messrs V Young & Sons, Bristol saw Simmentals at 163.5ppk and 157.5ppk, a Highland cross at 148.5ppk and Herefords at 147.5ppk and 144.5ppk. Further Limousins to 154.5ppk from Mr K Manley, South Molton and 148.5ppk from Messrs J & DJ Cotterill, Monksilver. Charolais at 146.5ppk from Mr PH & Mrs ME Buckingham & Son, Brompton Regis.

Sucklers sold to £1255.28 for a Simmental from Messrs V Young & Sons, who sold a Hereford at £1228.68.

Dairy breeds to 144.5ppk for a Dairy Shorthorn from Mr AJ Gay & Sons Ltd, East Harptree, who also sold a Friesian at 141.5ppk. Really well fed 836kg Friesian from Mr JM & Mrs SN Faun, Holford hit 142.5ppk and returned at a massive £1191.30.
