IN RESPONSE to letters in the paper and also comments on your website, I am obviously classed within the following: “It was trialled on a handful of oldies with dementia and they gave it the thumbs up, so South Waste Partnership nitwits say it’s workable (sic).”

Here in Wiveliscombe, along with other trial areas across Somerset, all households were part of a three-month experiment in which we were asked to recycle more of our household waste.

We were provided with another box in which we put all of those containers which presently have to go in the black sack collection, and ultimately into landfill.

Plastic items such as meat, vegetable and fruit containers, butter packs, Tetra Pak drinks cartons, soup, yoghurt and cream containers, batteries and broken electrical items such as old kettles and coffee makers – none of these items can be recycled at present and have to be slung into the black sack waste.

The trial here was a huge success, resulting in many fewer black sacks being filled. As a two-person household, we found we were putting out one black sack every three weeks, because all the rest of our waste was being recycled weekly.

Comments about needing more space for this process are invalid since the box takes the waste that will have been put into black sacks anyway.

It is distressing to read correspondents on your website happily admitting to putting food waste into black sacks instead of the food boxes provided.

If people were to care more about the environment and the world which we are creating for ourselves and for our children’s future, they would listen, rather than react.

Somerset Waste Partnership is to be commended on the work it has done to prove that this scheme works.

Hearing councillors from Sedgemoor District Council condemning the trials across parts of Somerset not only displays ignorance but a parochial attitude that is to be discouraged.

Why not try before condemning?
