PIP Sheard (Postbag, February 23) refers to the difficulties in negotiating St James Street.

There would be plenty of room there for pedestrians and cars were it not for the shopkeepers’ A-boards.

These are an irritation for any pedestrian who is forced out into the stream of traffic. For blind pedestrians they must be worse than an irritation.

They are quite unnecessary, too, since the shopkeepers have shopfronts in which to advertise their business.
