CHARITABLE Somerset College students have sent 60 boxes, filled with Christmas gifts, to poverty-stricken people in Eastern Europe and Asia.

The donation is the biggest so far made by childcare and health and social care students at the college, who have kept up the tradition for the past five years in conjunction with Blythswood Care, which supports impoverished communities in Europe, Asia and Africa.

Anne Staboulis, health and social care tutor at the college, said: “It's a wonderful thing to do, especially at this time of year.

“We're proud of our students for donating 60 Christmas boxes this year - this is the most we have ever sent.”

Student Jasmine Macey added: “It is a great idea and we are honoured to be able to help people less fortunate than us.

“Everyone deserves to have a special gift at this time of year and it is amazing knowing we can put a smile on someone's face for Christmas Day.”
