WORK has started on the Silvermead site in Alcombe which it is hoped will provide 33 affordable homes for about 100 people in West Somerset to rent.

The Magna West Somerset Housing Association development homes will be let through Homefinder Somerset Choice-Based Lettings scheme.

Preference will be given to people in housing need who have been living in the Minehead, Alcombe, Dunster, Timberscombe, Wootton Courtenay or Minehead Without parishes for three years or more.

The seven two-bedroom bungalows, 11 two-bedroom houses, 11 three-bedroom houses and four fourbedroom houses will be completed and let in stages from late 2013 to summer 2014.

Special features such as sheds, rainwater butts and compost bins are part of the focus on energy efficiency to minimise fuel costs for people who live there.

Piers Feilden, chairman of Magna Housing Group’s development committee, said: “To get to this stage has taken five-and-a-half years of hard work from the development team.

“It's wonderful to see work start on site and when the scheme is finished it will provide homes for 100 people, making a huge impact on local housing need.”
