8:00pm Wednesday 26th February 2014 in News
TWO young hockey stars at Queen’s College are celebrating after receiving international call-ups.
Dan Wilde has been selected for the Wales squad which will make up both the under-18s and under-16s at a tournament in Switzerland, while Patrick Free has been selected for the England Under-16s following a successful Futures Cup in Staffordshire.
There is also good news for sixth former Laura Fry, who has won a place on the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence programme as part of the new National Age Group Academy.
Ben Stevenson and Elliot Fathers were selected for the under-15 boys’ HiPAC squad where players participated in a three day camp at the University of Leeds at the end of October.
Students were also selected to represent the west region and competed in the Wessex Leopards team at the Futures Cup in October.
Livvy Hoskins and Rebecca Handford played for the under-16 girls, Patrick Free for the under-16 boys and Imogen Allen was chosen as non-travelling reserve for the under-18 girls’ team.
Queen’s hockey coach Ian Hayley, who represented South Africa at the London 2012 Olympics, said: “All of our players are home-grown, five of which have come through the hockey academy which is extremely satisfying.
“It is important that we expose as many of our best players to top level hockey as much as possible.”
