Artists get busy as dragons roll up for Taunton Deane Dragon Trail
11:00am Friday 25th April 2014 in News
DRAGONS have begun their invasion as part of the Taunton Deane Dragon Trail this week.
The first two models have arrived and artists have already begun the task of decorating them.
Somerset College, which is sponsoring a dragon, took delivery of its dragon on St George’s Day (April 23).
Deputy head of art and design Matt Cox said: “We’re delighted to receive one of the first Taunton Deane Dragons.
“Art and design students are being invited to submit their des-igns to decorate the dragon.
“The students are really excited about this project, and we’re looking forward to seeing some really creative designs that will inevi-tably cover many of the functions that are studied at the college, from painting through to surface design.
“Through initiatives such as this, we are able to give our students working briefs and projects that not only reflect and encourage student creativity but also support our local community projects through fundraising.”
The winning design will be painted on to the dragon during the art show at the college between June 9 and 13 when members of the public are welcome.
The finished dragon will be displayed at Somerset College during the summer.
The second dragon to arrive will represent a local VIP who has chosen a design from one of those submitted as part of the Gazette’s design competition – full details will follow next month.
As reported, the Taunton Deane Dragon Trail follows in the footsteps of other trails like Exeter’s Great Gorillas project, and will see around 30 decorated dragons set loose in Taunton, Wellington and Wiveliscombe.
Spokesman Mike Marshall, of the volunteer organising team, said: “It’s great to see the first full-size dragons arrive in Taunton.
“Judging the design competition was hugely inspiring and it’s clear many people are looking forward to seeing the dragons.
“We hope it will give the Taunton area a boost – and a bit of fun – this summer.”
We’ll soon be bringing you details on how YOU can help decorate one of the dragons at a special event in Taunton on May 17 – save the date keep reading for details.
The trail is being run by a team including volunteers, Taunton Deane councillors, along with representatives of Tone Leisure, the County Gazette, Deane DLO and local businesses.
