AVON and Somerset Police gave this update in the early hours, which appears to confirm there was no plane crash in the Minehead area last night.

"Police and other emergency services have now concluded their search of wooded areas following reports of a bright, smoking light that was seen to fall to ground in the vicinity of Dunster Lodge.

"An initial eye-witness account described seeing a helicopter come down, but later changed their account to a bright smoking light in the sky.

"All other reports in the area suggest some form of flare, bright light or Chinese lantern style item that was seen to float to ground near Dunster Lodge."

A VIDEO has been posted on twitter of a bright object in the sky above Minehead earlier tonight.

THE police helicopter is now understood to have left the scene.

Writing on Facebook, Charlie Mancini said: "Helicopter has gone about hour ago and haven't heard it since, not sure they found anything, it spent a long time above our houses."

WRITING on the Minehead Fire Station Facebook page, Jordon Brown described what he saw as he walked home near Minehead Hospital: "I heard a bang then then I carried on walking then I looked back and seen something in the air it was a light and there was black smoke"

MINEHEAD firefighters are also calling for help to establish what happened.

This was posted on the Minehead Fire Station Facebook page: 

"Incident in Minehead, does anyone have any information about a flare that may have been set off in the Minehead area this evening? If so please call the police on 101."

EMERGENCY services are debriefing at Minehead Fire Station.

A police helicopter was circling Alcombe Combe for over an hour according to eye witnesses.

ACCORDING to reports from social media users, there has been a heavy presence from emergency services in the Alcombe area.

AN Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said a short time ago: "We received the report at 8.15pm this evening from someone reporting that they had seen an aircraft come down in the Minehead area - and possibly near woodland in Dunster.

"A search has begun which includes the police helicopter and a local search and rescue team but so far nothing has been found.

"We're taking the search seriously and looking to see whether there is anything so support the report made to us and we're also looking at suggestions people may have been setting of flares in the area."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.

I don't think at the time she would of known what was going on, i mean at first i thought it was a police chase or something until i looked online

Even so, what difference would that have made as plod clearly felt the incident warranted air support, irrespective of the reason.

As for SusanT, I trust you wouldn't want their help (ditto air ambulance) if you were in trouble then? Grow up & be thankful it turned out to be nothing serious.
