Police advise people to video street preacher 'if he make offensive remarks'

First published in News

POLICE are advising people to video a street preacher on their mobiles if they think he is making offensive remarks.

Complaints have been made about Michael Overd following a number of confrontations in Taunton town centre, officers say.

Mr Overd has upset some passers-by in High Street when forthrightly expressing his views about homosexuality and sex outside marriage.

Officers have spoken to him and potential witnesses, including the manager of a business who claims some customers avoided the area on Saturday because they felt intimidated.

Sgt Neil Kimmins said: “People shouldn’t have abuse like that thrown at them.

“The street preacher likes to engage with individuals.

“He has a camera kit to protect himself from abuse and gathers evidence of people being hostile towards him.

“He’s being hostile towards them and they are responding.

“Homophobia is definitely an issue.

“We’re conscious of the right to free speech but it’s about getting the right balance so people can come to our town.”

Sgt Kimmins said he wants to gather evidence, which he will look at before discussing with the Crown Prosecution whether to make any charges.

He added: “I’d advise people that if they’re offended to record any incident on their mobile phone and send it to us.”

According to one complainant the preacher made “offensive and derogatory” comments about gay people in the town centre on Saturday and continued to do so despite someone approaching him and accusing him of being offensive.

Sgt Kimmins said: “This is about ordinary people being able to go about their daily activities without the fear of receiving abuse or harassment based on their perceived marital status or sexual bias.”

Approached by the County Gazette as he preached in Taunton town centre yesterday (Wednesday) Mr Overd, from Creech St Michael, said: “I’ve said fornication is a sin. I’m preaching what the Bible says.

“The Bible is an offence to sinners...they hate the word and the preacher. Sometimes we hate the truth.

“I’d rather people not be offended but I know they will be. I love them enough to tell them the truth.”

He said he loved God so much that he could face the fear of possible prosecution.

“I’ve done nothing wrong before Almighty God. My conscience is clear,” he added.

Anyone who feels offended by the street preacher can call police on 101 or e-mail any video evidence they obtain to ssntauntontowncentre@avonandsomerset.police.uk Mr Overd was cleared of harassment following a trial at Taunton Deane Magistrates’ Courts in February 2012.

This is a classic example of someone sanctimoniously forcing their beliefs onto other people. We all have a fundamental right to live how we choose, with or without religion. Oh and by the way I do not watch any soaps!!

Whatever he may feel if he knows anything about the bible its not to judge others as the bible says that's just for god. So judging people for being gay or sex outside marriage is nothing to do with him as if he was judged I expect he is guilty of sin just like others.

He should worry about repenting his sins and not the sins of others.

Judge not , less ye be judged!

If he has spare time why not do something good for the community, feed the homeless not engage people in arguments in the high street.

I can honestly say just like there are some extremist rogue Muslim clerics that give Islam a bad name, the same can be said for misinformed and narrow minded 'Christians' like this. I'm a Christian and I disassociate myself with idiots like this who preach nothing but hateful and prejudice messages. He is entitled to his own opinion but not entitled to twist the Bible reflect his own prejudice and fears. More importantly while he is entitled to his own opinion he should be invited to keep his opinion to himself and really should keep his side of the street clean before offering advice on how others should live their lives.

This is absurd. Thank goodness you aren't legislating, or else freedom of speech would be out the window.

He may be ignorant, but you can't but his ideas to bed unless he presents them and you knock them down. If you disagree with him, then you should be able to beat him on the merits of your arguments.

First off, quoting someone doesn't mean you aren't thinking - you have no idea how much this guy has thought through his interpretation of the bible.

Second, the quote you cite basically just says 'what goes around comes around'. It's actually a very popular idea at the moment.

Standing in a highstreet talking to passers-by is hardly forcing his beliefs on people. If you don't like it, ignore it or walk a different way.

I'm not sure about everyone having a right to live how they choose (it seems to me that the law necessarily limits freedom to live how we choose). But I am sure that we have a right to freedom of speech under the ECHR. So long as this preacher isn't inciting hatred (which he may be, for all I know), he is the one with a right to do the very thing everyone here seems outraged about.

When you change the channel on the tv you don't continue to get shouted at about the previous channel....

This guy and a couple of others aren't just talking to passers by, they are shouting at everyone in earshot and the only way to not hear it is to not be anywhere near them.

I don't like preachers, I don't like chuggers, they may all have good intentions (I don't think they do, but lets give them the benefit of the doubt) but they are methods I particularly dislike and put me off being in places that I think they are likely to be.

How I agree, Whereas Everyone has their own views and opinions and that is rightly so, we do not all stand in the street and try to shove our beliefs down everyone else's throats, perhaps they feel the need to do this as they are trying to convince themselves.

This is a prime example of a reason not to put your trust in the local constabulary. There efforts would be far better spends dealing with Anti social behaviour around the town, the drunks around the town centre, cyclist riding on the pavements, focusing on real crime.

as far as I am concerned the Police have lost my trust and this is yet another reason to confirm it.

Aren't all those participating in gay pride, doing exactly what they're accusing this man of doing forcing their views on everybody, I find the Gay pride march offensive, but I don't expect the police to go around arresting everybody just because I don't agree with it, wasting public money. Because that is exactly what those kinds of people do i.e. gay pride, force their views on everybody, and expect us to accept it.

I am sure on the day of Judgment and the Lambs Book of Life is opened and all those peoples names are not in their, they wil have wish they has listened. if you stand for Jesus now, He will stand for you on the day of Judgment.

Unfortunately, those who choose not to stand for Jesus now, will enjoy an eternity in the lake of fire.

The preacher is not "judging"; he is simply telling people that the bible says certain behaviours and attitudes are wrong in the eyes of God, and lead to hell. "Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10)
As for "Judge not, lest ye be judged", that is the most misused verse in the bible!! It DOES NOT mean anything goes! In its immediate context it is talking about hypocritical judging; not judging something which you do yourself.... It does NOT mean that we shouldn't lovingly warn someone that their actions and attitudes separate them from God for eternity, in the hope of presenting the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, who died in the place of sinners to take the punishment they deserved........
And you say it would be better to do something good, like feeding the homeless... It IS good to tell people of their need for a saviour!
