KING’S Hall School Year 2 classes spent a day exploring areas of historical and geographical importance on the Somerset Levels.
The day began with a mass scramble up Burrow Mump with compasses to orientate the major points and enjoy stunning views over the Levels in the sunshine.
Next, they visited King Alfred’s monument at Athelney and tried invading like the Danes.
Finally, at the Willows and Wetlands Centre, at Stoke St Gregory, the children unearthed facts about the Levels, including the discovery of the Alfred Jewel, as well as exploring a collection of items made from willow in the past, searching for things as varied as an aeroplane seat from the First World War, beehives, a potty chair and bird cages.
The day ended with a talk about Curry Moor, a session of sketching the landscape using willow charcoal made at the centre and a walk through a withy bed by the River Tone.
