A DETERIORATING six-storey 1960s office block that used to house Government departments is likely to be bulldozed and replaced by a care home.

Quantock House, on the corner of Paul Street and Mary Street has been sold to developers who will submit a planning application in due course.

The building used to house the Valuation Office and Defra but has been empty for several years and has deteriorated to such an extent that it is currently surrounded by safety scaffolding to prevent parts of its collapsing.

It has been sold to Bournemouth-based investment and development property specialist the Quantum Group, who work in the retirement and nursing care sectors.

Cllr John Williams, leader of Taunton Deane Council, said: “The council has worked with Quantum over some months to tidy up a number of title issues arising from a time when the council owned this site prior to 1962 and therefore enabling Quantum to purchase the site in the knowledge redevelopment would be considered.

“As a council we are excited by the opportunity now offered to see this prominent town centre site utilised and provide a valuable new facility for Taunton.

“If extra care provision is agreed it will provide much needed facilities for our ageing population in a wonderful location in the heart of the town centre and adjacent the wonderful heritage park of Vivary.”

A spokesperson from the Quantum Group said: “We are currently looking at plans to redevelop the site.

“One of the options that we are considering is the design and build of a brand new care home and associated extra care accommodation which will support independent living in older age.

“This will be subject to planning consent which is yet to be submitted and is likely to take a few months.

“We are really looking forward to undertaking this major investment in Taunton and creating an exemplar development.”
