Avon and Somerset Police say that a decision to scrap planned cuts to the force's budget is "very welcome"

A spokesman said that the unexpected announcement yesterday from the chancellor is "recognition by the government of the vital role the police service plays in protecting communities reflects the reality on the ground every day in Avon and Somerset".

Adding: "The planning we have been undertaking in anticipation of substantial cuts and the discussion these have generated may have been unsettling for the public, officers and staff but it was necessary to be as prepared as possible and ensure that our dialogue was candid and reflected the difficult options we may be faced with.

"Within the constabulary there is still have a comprehensive change programme to progress – transforming the delivery of policing to the communities of Avon and Somerset using new technology and building on the new operating model we introduced last year. We also need to respond to the changing demands being placed on us and ensure that we make decisions about deploying our resources in the context of threat, harm and risk.

"Finally, in line with the government’s announcements in the Autumn statement yesterday about the threat of terrorism, we need to review our capability and capacity so we are prepared to respond effectively should we need to, particularly our armed resources. We have an obligation to ensure that we deliver the most effective and efficient policing possible within the budget provided to us and this will remain our priority.

"The focus in the coming weeks and months will be to ensure programmes are in place to meet these challenges and to support the officers and staff in delivering the best possible policing to the people of Avon and Somerset.

"Today is an opportunity to thank the constabulary for the great work they do in the service of the public."
