A GROUP of travellers who occupied a park and ride site on the outskirts of Taunton are still there this morning (Monday, February 15).

They moved onto the Gateway site off Junction 25 of the M5 on Friday and have been there through the weekend.

Parish councillor Mike Marshall said: "Security is still in place and they have closed the exit gates to traffic so now all cars leaving the P&R have to exit via the bus lane, which means that you can't turn right to Ilminster or go straight across to Ruishton lane, without having to go around the motorway roundabout.

"I spent an 'enjoyable' 15 minutes doing that this morning.

"The cost of hiring in 24hour security each time should be investigated with total costs incurred to date."

Somerset County Council issued a statement last week saying bus services from its park and ride at Henlade are "not affected in any way" by travellers who moved in overnight.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are aware of a small number of travellers currently located at the Taunton Gateway, Ruishton Park and Ride.

"The park and ride service is open and fully operational, with passengers and bus services not affected in any way.

"The southern gate to the site has been closed for security reasons, but drivers are still able to access the park and ride site by using the north entrance nearest the motorway roundabout.

"The situation will be monitored today and throughout the weekend to ensure the Park and Ride service remains open.”
