THE Campaign ‘Ringing for England’ will encourage all the volunteer bell ringers to ring thousands of bells in our churches in every corner of the land today (Saturday, April 23, St George's Day).

‘Ringing for England’ is in its sixth year and is the brainchild of Libby Alexander, who said: "My aim is for England to be proud of her patron saint.

"Our campaign is to celebrate S. George’s Day every year, and what better way than support our many ringers who will be sharing their skills of a very English sound.

"Bell ringing is part of our living heritage. It allows us to hear the same sound that our ancestors heard on St. George’s Day for hundreds of years.

"Handel thought bell-ringing was 'the Sound of England'.

"The campaign brings together city and countryside communities in a joint celebration."

Organisers are hoping church bells across the Taunton Deane area will ring out today - starting with Churchstanton from 9am onwards.
