AN ELDERLY man who was airlifted to hospital after a two-car crash near Wellington has suffered potentially life-changing injuries.

Five people in total were rushed to hospital following the crash on the A38 at Beambridge Hill in Sampford Arundell shorlty before 6.30pm.

One elderly man was trapped and unconscious in one of the cars, and was cut free by firefighters before being airlifted to Southmead Hospital.

He is still at hospital, and it is not known what his current condition is, but a spokesman for police confirmed he had suffered "suspected" life-changing injuries.

The four other people were injured in the crash, and taken to Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton.

It is not yet known how serious their injuries are, but they are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called to a two vehicle road traffic collision at 6.20pm on the A38.

"There one person seriously injured with suspected life-changing injuries and four other people injured."

Firefighters from Wellington and Taunton were also called to the crash.

Upon arrival the firefighters confirmed there were three elderly casualites in one vehicle, one of whom was trapped, while there were another two from the second vehicle were walking wounded.

Firefighters worked to stabilise the car and assist to female casualties from the vehicle before working to extricate the male passenger using hydraulic cutting equipment.

Crews then made both vehicles, and scene safe, before leaving duty of care with the Police who reopened the road at 11.20pm.

A spokesman for the South West Ambulance Service Trust said: "We attended this incident at 6.20pm.

"Five people were involved in a side-on collision. Four were taken to Musgrove via road ambulance and one was airlifted to Southmead.

"There were three ambulances, two helicopters and a doctor in attendance."
