A WHEELCHAIR racing school boy has his eyes set on Tokyo after winning an array of medals at competitions in Britain and Brazil.

Jamie Edwards, a 16-year-old with cerebral palsy who has just finished his GCSEs at The Castle School in Taunton, has claimed a bronze medal at the Senior England Athletics Championships in Bedford at the end of July.

This is the latest medal added to his collection. Last year, Jamie was chosen to be part of Team GB at the Brazilian Paralympic School Games. The team came home with a full collection of golds, including three Jamie earned.

He now hopes to be heading to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics to compete in the T33 classification 100m race.

Wendy Edwards, Jamie's mum, said: "He started racing when he was 14 when he went to one of the SASP parallel success events.

"Jen Slade from SASP got him to try a racing wheelchair, he came second in the race and then wanted to join the club in Yeovil.

"We got him a wheelchair that was lighter so he could push himself around independently, before he couldn't do that because the chair was too heavy, he had to be pushed around.

"He has much more freedom, he would go whizzing around, then he found out he could go really fast. He said he liked feeling the wind in his hair, which was something he had never felt before."

Jamie was the only wheelchair user at his school, his mum said that meeting other people in wheelchairs meant he could be part of a group and he would no longer be the odd-one-out, he wouldn't have to feel different anymore.

Although Jamie now has new friends all across the country, he is still the only wheelchair racer in the South West, which means he has to travel to competitions across the country.

Jamie was the only junior wheelchair racer at the event when he came third in the event. He achieved a new PB of 18.02, ranking him 3rd in the UK in his classification.

He was also invited to be part of the paralympic Yes I Can advert on Channel Four and then attended the London Premier before the games kicked off.

He said: "It has all been amazing.

"My one second clip in the advert took all day, my arms were arching by the end.

"Tokyo is my next goal, it was amazing to have been selected to go to Brazil.

"All the top school-aged athletes went and we came home with nothing but gold.

"My coaches, paralympian David Weir CBE and his coach Jenny Archer MBE, inspire me. I want to be like David and do what he does."

Jamie will be travelling to Kingston upon Thames once a month to travel with his specialist coaches, and will be working with Jen Slade from SASP at home.

He will also be going on to Richard Huish College in September to study chemistry, maths and computing.
