THE proposed redevelopment of Minehead’s former hospital took a major step forward this week, as West Somerset Councillors voted to approve an application for Change of Use from a Hospital, to a Community Hub and Public Events Venue, plus four flats.

Bill Howard, joint owner and director of MOTHI (Minehead Old Town Hall Investments Ltd) said: “We are absolutely delighted at this news.

"This is an enormous step forward for our project to create a thriving Community Hub in the centre of Minehead that will also serve the wider community of West Somerset.

“We still have to secure funding for the renovations to the main building and old Assembly Rooms but are hoping to be able to return some of the less damaged areas to use in the not too distant future.”

Mr Howard will be onsite this Friday, October 7 as part of the Community Fair being organised by Engage.

He will be available to speak to anyone interested in learning more about the project plans for the site, and will be leading tours of the accessible parts of the buildings.

“Our vision for this iconic building has always been for it to become a community hub for Minehead and the surrounding area. The forecourt gives us the opportunity to begin to serve the community before the renovation work is complete," Mr Howard said.

“I know that a lot of people are curious about the project and am really looking forward to sharing our plans. I would also love to hear from any agencies that might be interested in space within the building, as restoration work progresses.”

Following the successful application, the next steps will be to conclude the formation of the CIC and establish a steering group of representatives from local organisations as well as members of the community.

Minehead’s first community fair is set to be held on the forecourt of the former hospital on Friday from 12 noon until 7pm, and will be opened by the first baby to have been born on the new top floor maternity ward, in 1953.

Engage chief officer, Katrina Midgley said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting new initiative for Minehead and are very grateful to Bill for the opportunity to publicise the amazing work that volunteers do in our communities.”
