THE rain just about held off for Taunton's first ever walk in the park, which took place in Vivary Park last Saturday, June 16.

Tone Leisure teamed up with Diabetes UK to help support sufferers of the disease, of which there are 107,000 in the South West, and 19,617 in Somerset.

The people of Somerset were invited to take part in the keep fit initiative to raise awareness for the charity.

Sarah Reeves, fundraising manager, said: "It was a really well attended event, we had 107 people turn up."

Joining the walk was a group of Taunton golfers from Proactive Golf Association, who were all advised by their GP's to get more active for a healthier lifestyle.

Ken Knox, a member of the association, said: "Some of our group have diabetes and we are all very enthusiastic about the benefits of taking more exercise."

There were plenty of chances to try different activities on the day, from Tri-golf, beat the goalie, bouncy castles, and face painting.

Melissa Day, health development officer for Tone Leisure, said: "Walking is such a good activity for all-round good health.

"Tone Leisure's mission is to get more peo ple more active more often and walking is great for people with diabetes and for every one else, too."

Sarah added: "We will definitely do another one next year."
