THE last survivor from the trenches of the First World War has just reached a remarkable milestone.
Harry Patch, from Somerset, has celebrated his 109th birthday.
Incredibly, Mr Patch still lives in the county he was born in back in 1898 - home is now a residential home in Wells.
He still has memories of the horrors of the Great War (1914-18), including Passchendale.
Taunton MP Jeremy Browne visited Mr Patch to congratulate him on his latest achievement.
Mr Browne said: "Harry Patch was born in Somerset in 1898 and experienced the full horrors of trench warfare.
"Just being in his presence is a genuinely awe-inspiring experience.
"He may not realise it himself, but Harry Patch is a national hero, and a remarkable link back to one of the most significant periods in the entire history of England.
"We have just marked the 25th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War, including a memorable service in Vivary Park.
"We should never forget the courage shown by Harry Patch's generation, and those who fought in other wars, from World War Two and the Falklands to Iraq and Afghanistan today."
