WEST Somerset dry-stone waller, Henry Prout, has won a prestigious award from the Exmoor Society.

The Samuel Foss Conservation Award is given annually for outstanding work by individuals or groups to protect the national park's landscape, wildlife and historic environment.

Henry, who learned his skill from his father and uncle, said: "The walls on Exmoor are different from others because the rocks are flat and slatey.

"When building up the two sides, the middle has to be filled with little stones with big ones put in to keep the two sides together.

"On a good day I can complete a length of three metres."

Rachel Thomas, chairman of the society, said: "Protection of Exmoor's special landscape features depends very much on being able to retain skilled craftsmen working on the moor."
