A SCHEME to improve reading standards at a primary school has received a £14,400 grant from Taunton Deane Borough Council.
The cash will be used to help turn a room at Minerva Primary School, Taunton, where reading standards have been consistently low and below national averages for years, into a purpose-built library.
A spokesman said the facility will be designed to provide "cosy corners" where pupils can curl up and read a book, while there will also be an outdoor read area.
He added: "The project is to provide a welcoming room with quality resources where pupils are eager to come and read.
"With support from volunteers, parents will be encouraged to choose books with their children and to use the facilities after school.
"Parent sessions will be run to show them how to read with their child and how to use the library.
"By emphasising the importance of reading the school aims to encourage families to promote a love of reading at home as well as at school."
