A HIGHBRIDGE woman said she is pleased a historic memorial has been given Grade II listed status by Heritage England.
Mrs Irene Harvey, 89 from Highbridge said she paid for four memorial stone plaques to be added to the memorial at Southwell Gardens in around 2000 to remember those who died in the first world war.
Irene said she could not visit the site often due to ill health but remained committed to its upkeep.
“The memorial is very special to me. I am a member of the Highbridge War Memorial Trust and helped to run Southwell House for years,” she said.
“One of my relatives, Private Reginald Nichols, has his name on one of the memorial plaques and I wanted to get the stones put on so everyone could be remembered.
“It is important that those who served from around Highbridge are remembered and I am pleased the memorial has been recognised and listed.”
