BABY Charlie Gard, who was the focus of a legal row over his treatment, has died, according to a family spokesman.

He spent the final hours of his brief life in a hospice and passed away today (Friday) at 11 months old.

He had a rare genetic condition that caused progressive brain damage and muscle weakness.

His parents, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, fought a lengthy legal battle with Great Ormond Street Hospital to allow him to be taken to the US for treatment.

But this week they dropped their legal battle after an expert said it was too late for any treatment to work.

In a statement this evening, Ms Yates said: "Our beautiful little boy has gone, we are so proud of you Charlie."
