IT IS that time of year again as the town prepares to switch on its Christmas lights.

It was decided in September that the way the lights are displayed in the town will be changing this year.

The town council decided to spend a bit more in order to have Festive Lighting store, maintain and deliver the lights.

The new deal worked out to be around £3,000 more than the previous agreement the council had with Deane DLO.

The light switch-on event takes place on Saturday, December 2, from 4pm until 6.30pm.

Town mayor Gary James said: “The new lights will be beautiful display.

“I hope lots of people come out to enjoy the lights and the atmosphere.

“Two local children will be helping to switch on the lights.

“Everyone please come down and show your support, and I wish everyone in the town a merry Christmas.”

Earlier in the day the craft market will be starting its festive season.

The market is usually held on the third Saturday of each month, but will be holding an extra session this weekend from 9am until 2pm.

Santas grotto will be open as well as Wellington Farmers’ Market.

The craft market was started in April by Maxine Price, Charlotte Beatty and Laura Knight.

Ms Knight said: “Wellington has a wealth of small crafting business who offer a brilliant variety of niche products and we wanted to find a way to encourage local people to support them.

“We have been delighted with the response both from customers and businesses, and the market has gone from strength to strength to become a really established part of the town’s trading calendar.”

Other entertainment taking place in the evening includes sheep spotting, a performance from Wellington Majorettes and the celebration of light.

Wellesley Park Primary School’s choir will also perform.

The winner of the best Christmas display from shops in the area will be announced.
