SIRLOIN, gammon and rump will be back on the menu at JD Wetherspoon pubs across Somerset after a product recall on Tuesday night’s Steak Club.

The steaks were pulled from all of the chain’s 900 pub kitchens after a labelling error by supplier Russell Hume Ltd – which it has since axed.

The items were first off the menu on Tuesday, January 23, and the recall also affected Jamie Oliver, Green King and Marston’s.

Somerset pubs The Perkin Warbeck and the Coal Orchard, Taunton, the Carnival Inn, Bridgwater, The Cerdic, Chard, the Iron Duke, Wellington, The Reed’s Arms, Burnham-on-Sea, and the Duke Wellington, Minehead, were all caught up in the recall.

Customers were forced to choose other options and chicken replaced the steak in the mixed grill.

Wetherspoon is now sourcing steaks from a range of new suppliers in Britain and Ireland.

Somerset County Gazette:

Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin said: “Firstly we wish to apologise to our customers for the inconvenience caused to them.

“However, our decision to stop serving steak from Tuesday (January 23), despite limited information from the supplier, was the correct one.

“Steak is one of the most popular dishes on our menu, and we serve around 200,000 per week on average, about half of these on our extremely popular Tuesday Night Steak Club.

“We have now sourced alternative suppliers and our pub staff are once again looking forward to serving the steak dishes from Tuesday January 30 onwards.

“On Wednesday (January 24) the FSA reported that they were thoroughly investigating Russell Hume Ltd, but also stressed that there was no indication that people had become ill from eating meat supplied by them.

“We will continue to monitor the situation.”

Wetherspoon pubs are displaying information on the situation for customers to read and the company has also added a question and answer document on its website.
