A CHARD man accused of assaulting his partner by punching and kicking her has been ordered to stand trial in September - despite the alleged victim not making a complaint.

Somerset Magistrates were told that two independent witnesses contacted the police after claiming they had seen Sean Leslie Brun punching the victim and then kicking her repeatedly to the leg.

The 25-year-old, of Brunel Court, claimed the offence didn’t take place.

He pleaded not guilty to assaulting his partner by beating her at Chard on May 15.

Prosecutor Christine Hart said that the complainant had not made a statement to the police but the incident was seen by the two independent witnesses.

“They said they saw the defendant punching his partner and then kicked her a few times to her leg,” she said.

The complainant said that Brun had not assaulted her but said she had kicked herself while they were in town.

A review of the case was conducted and the matter was adjourned until September 4 when he must return to the court for a trial to take place.

Until then he was released on unconditional bail.
