A HEALTHY blast of salty sea air could soon be experienced in a historic former chapel.

Proposals have been revealed to create a salt spa in The Octagon, in Middle Street, Taunton.

The development would include two salt caves reproducing the effect of sea air, which are believed to improve health and mood and may improve respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis and sinus congestion.

Tacettin Kilic, from South Molton, has applied to Taunton Deane Borough Council for planning permission for the project in the premises, which was opened by famous Methodist preacher John Wesley in 1776.

An adult cave would be able to hold up to 12 people, while the other cave would have sufficient space for a couple of families.

The rooms will have drywalls isolated with rock wool, with their inside covered with a special salt layer acting as a buffer for air moisture and helping maintain an aseptic environment.

Carpet tiles inside the cave will be removed temporarily from the floor and the ground will be covered with salt.

Special lighting will create a relaxed atmosphere, while entrance to the caves will be through an airlock.

There will also be five small treatment rooms offering other natural therapies such as physiotherapy, reflexology, massage and aromatherapy.

The two-storey building will also include three toilets, a reception and waiting room, kitchen and changing area.

The planning application says: "We plan to fully respect the current character and with a light structure using natural materials we are hoping to blend the new and the old together."
