SCOTTISH post-punk band Orange Juice had their biggest hit with Rip it Up.

The BloomBerry Juice Company based in Heronsyke, Clyst Hydon Cullompton, Devon, have their biggest by pressing it down and squeezing the juice.

The husband and wife team of Chris and Sarah Jones are the ‘juicers’ behind this independent business for the past 10 years.

These artisans worked in the food industry before they set up their company. Sarah worked as a senior analyst with Nestle where she helped develop food flavours by organising taste panels to see what people thought of the latest flavour. And her husband Chris who has recently retired was a technical manager at Vimto.

They have been able to take their ‘food experience’ and have harnessed it so it can is being used to strengthen and develop their own business.

The choice of non alcoholic award winning drinks produced by The BloomBerry Juice Company includes:

- Apple, blueberry and lavender

- Orange, honey and elderflower

- Cloud lime (pear, apple, lime, limeflower, Matcha tea)

- Abbey Rose (Apple, cranberry and Rose)

- Rhubery (Rhubarb, strawberry and ginger)

- Mull’d Berry

It all started rather by accident when the couples daughter, Maddy, asked them to help run a juice bar at the Bloomsbury festival.

They really enjoyed the experience and The BloomBerry Juice Company was born. The company logo of flowers and berries which you can see adorning the bottles was created by a family member.

All the fruit and even the honey is local, much of it coming from the village where the couple live in Devon.

Speaking about why she enjoys being in business, Sarah said: “We have a passion for providing and using natural ingredients and providing something which people like.

“We also have Smoothie Bikes which we take to festivals where people cane mix and blend their own drink.

“We attend a number of festivals and it is interesting when it comes to healthy eating. I am impressed by those who do not have to drink or feel they have to get drunk to have a good time.

“It is now much easier not to drink alcohol and much more cool.

“When we go to festivals we have temperance bar where people can select their juice of their choice and at the back of the bar we have optics with shots of different flavours such as lime or lavender which people can add to their drinks.

“It is always interesting to taste what concoctions people create.

“A lot of people in their 30s who attend festivals do not drink.

“They ride the bike which turns the mixer and we add fresh fruit from our garden and from the local area.

“We shy away from adding any additives or extra sugar as we want to produce a quality non-alcoholic drink.

“We use quality ingredients which means what we make is not cheap.

“People are looking for something different for dinner parties.

“They want to find food which has a story so they can tell people about it and who made it.

“With people coming here (Taunton Farmers’ Market) it all helps them become aware of local produce.”

Many of us are embracing a hippy lifestyle.

These could be hippy with a capital H or a small h. But many of us are thinking green, thinking lean and being more environmentally friendly.

Even if we are not doing it because of a ‘Hippy way of thinking’ it all helps to cut down on our bills which everyone would be pleased about.

Sarah is comfortable with being called ‘a hippy’.

She said: “I always wanted to work on the land. I am a farmer’s daughter and love the outdoors.

“I enjoy meeting my customers, many of whom have become friends and who I see at the different farmers’ markets.

“We all have a community gene and this is providing a service to people.

“What we set out to achieve we have done.

“We are always thinking of new drinks.

“We did come up with a cherry juice but we were not happy with it as it did not have that WOW we were looking for.

“But we will try again.”
