A VAN was burnt out in a fire in the grounds of a village primary school near Taunton.

A crew from Taunton Fire Station was sent to the incident in the car park of Curry Mallet Primary School, in Lower Street.

A second engine was requested to attend the incident shortly before 8am on Tuesday (August 10).

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "(We were called) from the driver of a van whose engine compartment had caught fire in the car park of Curry Mallet Primary School on Lower Street.

"Crews were soon on scene and confirmed the van was well alight.

"They set to work using breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and hydraulic spreaders for better access to the engine compartment, and soon had the fire under control.. Once extinguished and the vehicle, and scene, made safe, duty of care was left with the owner awaiting recovery.

White Watch attended a van fire this afternoon at Curry Mallet, the Incident Commander requested an additional appliance from Taunton to assist.

"Four breathing apparatus used, one hose-reel jet, one thermal image camera, battery operated spreaders and small tools."
