A FARM vehicle was destroyed by fire - which spread to half an acre of barley stubble - in a Somerset field.

Fire crews from Bridgwater and Williton were sent to the scene, off Doniford Road, near Watchet, at just after 6.45pm last night (Friday) after 'multiple calls' from members of the public.

"On arrival, crews confirmed the telehandler was well alight and got to work setting up equipment in order to extinguish it," said a spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

"One large agricultural telehandler extinguished using compressed air foam, hose reel jets, two breathing apparatus and small tools.

"Also, crews extinguished half an acre of barley stubble and two straw bales."

The cause of the fire was accidental, they added.
