AN emergency road closure in West Somerset has been enforced for safety reasons while a detailed inspection is carried out

All road users have been prohibited from using the clifftop B3191 Cleeve Hill, near Watchet, with immediate effect.

Somerset County Council’s highways team took the decision yesterday (Thursday, January 12) following a geotechnical survey, combined with expert advice, that suggests significant movement within the coastal slope adjacent to the road.

Improvements were made to the road to improve safety measures last August.

The geotechnical challenges affecting the cliff face are complex and require a high degree of monitoring.

The council's team acted quickly and the road will be closed until further notice while detailed inspections are carried out.

The council's have been instructed to implement the closure using the new road closure gates.
