THE lorry fire on the M5 earlier this morning (Thursday, June 22) resulted in 20 tonnes of animal feed being destroyed, according to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service (DSFRS).

Emergency services were called to the incident at East Huntspill between Junctions 23 and 22 shortly before 7.30am

Fire control sent a total of three fire engines from Taunton and Bridgwater, along with a water bowser and environmental protection unit after receiving "multiple calls" and all three northbound carriageways were closed for a period, causing lengthy tailbacks.

The flat lorry, which was carrying dried and liquid animal feed was well alight on their arrival.

A DSFRS spokesperson said the animal feed was totally destroyed and the lorry was 80 per cent damaged.

The environmental protection unit worked to contain the leaking animal feed.

Lane 1 remains closed but is expected to return to normal between 12.15pm and 12.30pm.
