A VOLUNTEER from a Somerset-based wildlife rescue charity came to the aid of two beavers who got themselves trapped in a storm drain.
Secret World Wildlife Rescue received a call about a potential otter trapped in Frome on Friday, October 20.
Upon arrival, Wildlife Care Assistant Matt quickly realised that the otter was in fact not one, but two beavers.
The pair of juveniles were trapped in an overflow drain that was filled with around a metre’s worth of dirty water.
It was important to get them out as quickly as possible as they were at risk of drowning if left in the storm drain.
One of the beavers appeared much weaker than the other, leading Secret World to believe it had been trapped in the drain for a longer period of time.
Wildlife Care Assistant Matt noted how heavy the beavers were.
“They are certainly bigger than you expect and really quite heavy, weighing in at about 15kg each," he said.
After rescuing them and placing them into secure metal cages for transportation, Matt drove the beavers to RSPCA West Hatch in Somerset.
The beavers were soon settled down into a cosy pen where they spent the night and received ongoing rehabilitation.
Eventually, the beavers were released back into their Frome waters, assisted by their rescuer Matt, who was pleased to be involved.
