PLANNED work to resurface Weston's Broadway is due to begin next week.

The work, which begins on Monday, May 13, could take up to three weeks to complete. A night closure will be in place between 8pm and 6am to minimise disruption.

This won't be in force on the weekends or the bank holiday.

Wainwright, the council's resurfacing contractor, will be carrying out the work.

The road will be closed in phases from the A370 hospital roundabout to Oldmixon Road (beyond the mini roundabout with Winterstoke Road). For the first few nights there will also be works taking place on the hospital roundabout under multi-way traffic signals.

Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council's executive member with responsibility for roads said: "This is a busy road in Weston that connects two key routes in and out of the town.

"As a result it receives a huge amount of wear and tear and is in need of resurfacing. We appreciate that this will cause some disruption but we would ask people to be patient while these essential works care completed.

"I completely recognise the frustrations of our residents with the condition of our roads which is a country-wide problem.

"Last year the council allocated an additional £2.5m in local funds for road maintenance to the £7.5m we received direct from government for this purpose, while almost half of local authorities are cutting or freezing these budgets.

"Our new contract with Wainwright will enable us to make that money go further – but that’s against the backdrop of a £16bn national gap in funding that is needed to bring our roads back into an effective condition."

Those that will be most affected by the closure will receive a letter through their doors with more information.

A North Somerset Travel and Roads spokesperson added: "Advanced Notice – Broadway and Oldmixon Road, Weston-super-Mare.

"Resurfacing and minor works are programmed to start on Monday, May 13, 2024, for three weeks (excluding bank holidays and weekends).

"To carry out these works safely a road closure will be in place between 20:00-06:00.

"The road will be closed in phases from the A370 hospital roundabout to Oldmixon Road (beyond the mini roundabout with Winterstoke Road).

"For the first two nights of these works (May 13 and 14) three-way traffic signals will also be in place on the A370 hospital roundabout.

"Traffic Marshals will be positioned in key locations to assist local residents throughout the road closure."
