SCHOOLCHILDREN in Somerset are heading back to class this morning after a day of disruption yesterday.

About 100 schools were shut due to the snow but there are no reported closures today.

The County Gazette brought you a list of the closed schools.

The extent of the closures has sparked a debate among readers on whether too many schools were shut - see below.

I think that closing the schools is a good thing, looking at the safety of the students, this doesnt happen very often, and i think they should be able to enjoy it!

many schools are closed to save their own backs to save payouts for compensation in case of accidents still think they could of let parents know earlier risking their own lives to get kids to school to arrive 10 minutes before the bell rings to be told sorry the school is shut the schools need a better system to contact parents early enough.

The schools can't afford to have a pupil come to school and hurt themselves on ice or snow so they close.

Its the parents fault who blame the schools and then put in a accident claim for conpensation. So don't blame the schools blame the 'blame cult' in this country,.

Two points here.

First..... Why dose the link take me to a page that can't be found?

Second..... Why not teach the kids how to take responsibility for their own safety?

nobody is saying the schools and pupils are at fault regarding compensation and accidents
it was the words of county hall and the goverment...
i agree they should get the day off if the snow is bad and it is a safety hazzard.

Do the teachers still get paid for the day?

The most snow we have had in 18 years! Our children will probably never see snow like this is their childhood again. I had to take a day off work as my childrens school was shut but believe this was the best thing ever. Nothing to do with injuries or risks, just purely down to having a brilliant fun filled day with my kids in the snow. If you looked out your windows and saw how happy these kids were innocently playing in the snow you would see it would of been a shame to go to school and miss it all.

My daughter was sent home from West Somerset Community College at lunchtime when the snow had gone and the sun was out. Not expecting that, my wife and I were both at work and didn't know. My daughter was unable to get in and went to a friends house who was also on her own. If anything had happened to them, who would be responsible?

Somerset-runner : good question how old is yr daughter they should of at least phoned you or yr wife and made them aware. Glad I don't live in minehead area. I went to court fields a dump and training ground for half of somersets career criminals but I wasn't allowed home until a parent had been contacted.

You know what they say those who can't teach!

Snow, a rare thing these day's should be enjoyed by the young, so was school closure's really so bad? I didn’t really have a problem with the my son's school (Court fields) being closed, but there was a lack of communication getting the Parents informed. In school news-letters we have always been told that Orchard fm be inform of any closures, Other parents and I had nothing but problems getting onto this website, due to the demand from other Somerset school's/ parent’s. School phone lines were blocked. Why didn’t the school use their own website to inform parents?
I’m lucky and was home for my son but many children went to school and were sent home, to find their parent's gone to work, and doors locked. This forced children to friend’s homes, or worse to stay out on the streets until their parents returned. Surely the Children who went to school should have been kept there, until the school had informed parents.
