A LOWLY robin is ruffling the feathers of a supermarket giant in Taunton.

The bird has taken up residence around the Sainsbury's superstore at Hankridge Farm, Taunton, and has become a regular sight and sound in-store for shoppers since Christmas.

But store bosses have been trying to work out how to make the bird leave - leading some of the robin's admirers fearing its future may be in doubt.

A group set up on social networking website Facebook site calling for the Robin to be saved rapidly attracted more than 2,000 members, with supporters signing up across the globe.

The group was set up by Angi Wright, 42, who works near the store.

She told the County Gazette: “The robin has been in there all over the winter. It comes in and flies around the bit above the flower stand and sings.

“I've been told it set the alarms off at the store on Christmas day.

“I heard that Sainsbury's were trying to get rid of it and feared the worst so started the Facebook group. People from all over the world have joined.

“Sainsbury's have said they are going to try and trap it and release it so the group has done its job.”

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: “The robin is singing and flying around in the warehouse at the back of the store and we are working with Nature England to assess how we can release it unharmed so that it can fly more freely than it is able to in our warehouse.”
