WELLINGTON will be among the clubs discussing a proposed expansion of the Screwfix Direct Western League Premier Division at a special general meeting on Monday.

The meeting, at Bridgwater Sports & Social Club, has been called to sound out feelings on the Football Association's wish to standardise the number of teams in all leagues at level three, the Western Premier Division's grade.

It would involve increasing the size of the Premier, which has 18 teams currently, to 22 within the next two seasons.

Ken Clarke, the league secretary, said this week: "We have already contacted clubs from our feeder leagues with a view to discussing membership. But we need to know what the present clubs feel about it."

Western League secretaries have been asked to sound out opinion before the meeting, at which every club must be represented.

Mr Clarke added, "Clubs should remember that we are being offered a one-off opportunity to establish the Western League as THE league in the South-West."

There have been fears that the Western League might eventually lose clubs following the formation of the new Conference second division, which will take teams from the Dr Martens Southern League.

In recent years, the Western has lost several top clubs to the Southern and many clubs believe that the current number of 34 Premier-Division matches is not enough.

The Screwfix League are hoping to increase the number of teams taking part next season to 44. with 22 teams in each section.
