DEVON County Council have launched a major public consultation to help shape the new budget for vital services to over 700,000 people in the county.

The biggest budget consultation undertaken by the council involves a survey of residents and an internet questionnaire, which can be found at http://www.devon.gov.uk

The conference was set up after the council received a provisional grant increase from the Government, which is the third lowest percentage rise for any county in the country, amid calls for a single figure council tax rise.

Public views are sought by the council on three potential budget options for 2004/5. These include a council tax rise of seven per cent with £6.9 million spending cuts, a rise of six per cent with spending cuts totalling £9.2 million or cuts of £11.5 million but with only a five per cent rise in council tax.
