WEST SOMERSET MP Ian Liddell-Grainger is aiming to become a shadow of his former self -- and raise much needed funds for local branches of the British Heart Foundation.

He is avoiding sugar-loaded drinks and doughnuts in favour of mineral water and celery as one of the latest members of the House of Commons branch of Weight Watchers.

He said: "It's obvious to anyone who sees me that I'm overweight, so I'm hoping to do myself some good while helping others.

"I chose the BHF because it works tirelessly to raise awareness that being overweight and smoking is not good for you.

"I agree with the Government that the nation is generally overweight and does not eat healthily, so I felt that I should lead by example."

His efforts are starting to pay off, as he has already lost eight pounds. He is asking that anyone wishing to sponsor him should contact the constituency office at 16, Northgate, Bridgwater.
