Women suffering domestic abuse are being invited to attend to a new, informal drop-in group offering confidential support and a safe place where experiences can be shared.

From January 26, the group, which is being termed as such loosely because the scheme also offers a one-to-one service, will meet at Camborne Wesley Methodist Church and Wesley Centre, Chapel Street, Camborne, on Mondays from 10am until noon.

"The word "group" can actually put people off, it's more of a "drop-in" to meet other women who've shared the same experiences," said co-ordinator Sarah Milnes. "We can also offer a one-to-one service if a woman doesn't want to speak in front of others."

With Hedy Robertson-Jones, from Cornwall Victim Support, Sarah has set up the Camborne group following the success of a similar scheme in Falmouth.

This group meets at Falmouth Family Centre, Park Terrace, Falmouth, on Wednesdays, also from 10am until noon.

In addition, a new Helston group also starts on January 28. This will meet at Culdrose Community Centre, Hibernia Road, Helston, on Wednesdays from 1pm until 3pm.

The groups are intended to be relaxed and informal and are run entirely by those who attend.

"Women decide the way the group is run and what they want out of it," said Sarah. "During the year workshops and talks are arranged varying from a talk by a family law solicitor to beauty treatments. These workshops are free and open to any woman who wishes to attend."

Support is also offered to the children of women suffering domestic abuse. This can range from opportunities for free holidays, holiday workshops and individual support by qualified staff.

A free creche is provided at each group.
