THE Liberal Democrats - as expected - have won the majority of seats on South Somerset District Council.

They claimed 36 out of the 60 seats available at the district authority.

Conservative claimed 17 seats, while Independent candidates won seven.

Turnout was 46.85 per cent - a substantial increase on the local elections of 1999 when the turnout was 38 per cent. There were 53,373 votes cast out of a total electorate of 113,900.
