DANESFIELD Middle School, Williton, have won the finals of the Norwich Union Inter Cricket Indoor Competition 2002 which took place at the Centre of Cricketing Excellence at Taunton.

A total of 23 schools from all over the Somerset area took part in the six a sidxe tournament competing in area groups for a place in the finals day at the County Ground.

The three schools who finally made it through to represent their areas were Danesfield, West Somerset; Gordano School, North Somerset and King Arthurs School, Wellington.

The matches were played in the main hall at the Centre of Excellence and were arranged on a 'round robin' basis.

This simple and fast moving game provided a tremendous competition for all concerned with Danesfield clinching the title with victories in both games.

Congratulations were in order, not only to the winners but also to Gordano and King Arthurs who provided stern competition,

Gordano beating King Arthurs in the final game to secure the runners-up position.

Presentations to all the competitors were made by Somerset CCC fast bowler Simon Francis over lunch at the Centre. In addition water bottles and T-shirts were provided by Norwich Union on the day with cricket equipment bags being sent to all the schools who took part in the competition.

The Inter Cricket initiative is aimed specifically for children of 11-16 years of age, it is fast, fun and exciting, featuring coloured clothing and equipment, similar to the Norwich Union league.

The scheme has created interest with both schools and coaches on a local and national basis, as it helps to bridge the gap between Kwik Cricket and the hard ball game, while at the same time providing a link to the senior game.
