A PUBLICAN from Rockwell Green says he is set to quit the town after he was attacked in his pub.

Dean Stojic, 31, who has run The Barley Mow with his partner Hannah McGrath for two years told the County Gazette he feels vulnerable after police failed to act after a customer tried to strangle him three weeks ago.

Mr Stojic said: "The attack was completely unprovoked, I did everything by the book but I had no back up."

Mr Stojic who lives above the pub with his three young children said he came downstairs after tending to his two-year-old to discover there had been some trouble in the pub.

He said: "I asked the man to calm down and then he smashed a glass onto the bar.

"He leapt towards me and grabbed me around the neck, it was totally unprovoked."

Mr Stojic said that as other customer's tried to pull the man off him he shouted for someone to call the police.

The man then left the pub and tried to smash a window.

He said: "We called the police but no-one came out and then at 1am they telephoned to find out what had happened.

"An officer did not come out until the next day to take a statement."

Police told him that no action would be taken, as there was not enough evidence.

He said: "What kind of signal does this give out?

"In my trade you cannot defend yourself from customers otherwise you might get your license taken away.

"The police have really let me down.

"I feel isolated and I have to protect my family."

Mr Stojic who is an experienced licensee says he had never had any trouble in the pub before but will now go back to Devon where he also runs a pub with his brother.

A spokesman for the police said: "This incident was fully investigated by the police.

"A number of witness statements were taken but it was decided that no further police action was required.

"After looking at the evidence it was decided that the incident did not meet the threshold test for referral to the Crown Prosecution Service."
