Taunton Blackbrook have moved out of the County League Premier Division drop zone after picking up four points from their two home matches last week, but still remain in a relegation dog fight.

Last Wednesday, the side picked up a superb 2-1 victory against highflying Cheddar but could only manage a 3-3 draw with relegation rivals Frome Town Reserves on Saturday.

Blackbrook are just a place outside the drop zone and Cutters Friday’s victory over Glastonbury on Tuesday means they are just a point behind the Taunton with a game in hand and superior goal difference.

Against Cheddar, Chris Curtis missed a penalty – the first time he has done so for the club – before Tom Wadham gave Blackbrook the lead on the half hour mark.

Cheddar hit back to level just before the interval and piled on the pressure in the second half, but the hosts held firm and nicked the points late on when Wadham volleyed his second.

On Saturday, Curtis made up for his midweek miss by giving Blackbrook the lead from the spot.

Frome equalised on 20 minutes and went in front five minutes before the break.

Blackbrook’s hopes of avoiding the drop seemed to be slipping away when Frome made it 3-1 five minutes after the break.

However, Pat Sherwood turned to fire home a fine shot to reduce the deficit and Simon Stone scored the leveller after Wadham’s shot had been saved.

Blackbrook were away to St George Easton-in-Gordano last night (Wednesday) and host local rivals Bishops Lydeard on Saturday (3pm).
