INSPECTORS have praised successful efforts to improve standards at Holway Park Community Primary School in Taunton.

An OFSTED report for the 222-pupil school concluded that “pupils make good progress from very low starting points” with aspects of their personal development “outstanding”.

It lauds the “inspirational leadership” of head teacher Paul Harper, adding: “The measures put in place to raise attainment are now showing dividends.

“This is not only evident in pupils’ improving literacy and numeracy skills, but in subjects like music, art and PE, which are real strengths.”

Better teaching and learning were noticed by the inspectors.

They said: “Recent development of the cur riculum has created a wealth of stimulating learning experiences that foster a love of learn ing in the pupils.”

The school promotes equal opportunity and tackles discrimination, resulting in harmonious relationships and good achievement among groups of all pupils.

Effective partnerships have been built with parents and guardians, as well as with other schools and agencies.

The report found that Holway Park is “a good school…with a good capacity for more improvement in the future”.

The inspectors suggest teachers should con sistently check pupils’ progress to identify where help is needed or new challenges could be provided, while every opportunity should be taken to develop children’s speaking and listen ing skills.

A delighted Mr Harper told the County Gazette: “It’s a reflection of all the hard work the whole team at Holway Park put in.

“I’m pleased that Holway as a community has a school it can be proud of.”
