THE County Gazette-backed appeal for SURE – the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment - topped the £202,000 mark this week thanks to a donation from Taunton’s outgoing Mayor Bob Bowrah.

Cllr Bowrah, who chose three charities to benefit from fundraising during his year in office, donated £1,182.26p.

Similar amounts went to SSAFA and the Children’s Hospice South West.

On Monday SURE’s Eric Saffin received a cheque for £1,000 from Mecca Bingo in Corporation Street, Taunton.

Mecca put up the cash after donations for the 2004 Tsunami were left for five years in one of their store rooms, as previously reported in the Gazette.

Gazette readers were asked to choose one of three charities for the money to be given to.

Mr Saffin said: “We are grateful so many voted for us and would like to thank Mecca Bingo very much indeed for the £1,000. It is greatly appreciated.”

Other donations this week came from Mr and Mrs Woolley (£30) and Hazel Weston £29.
