A RECORD 19,000 potholes have already been filled in on Somerset’s roads this year – with even more to come.

Roads across the county cracked up after the worst snow in a generation at the start of 2010.

Highways teams have been working flat out to bring our roads back up to scratch and expect to fill in more than 4,000 in the last four months of the year.

That compares to a total of 18,000 potholes repaired in the whole on 2009.

A Somerset County Council spokesman said repairs to the network of roads in the county are ongoing, with problems picked up and reported by highways teams and members of the public.

Cllr Anthony Trollpe-Bellew, the county council’s cabinet member for environment, said 32 dedicated teams were deployed to repair potholes caused by the icy blast in January and February.

He added: “Improving Somerset’s roads is one of the council’s main priorities.

“The extreme weather created a large number of potholes and we have been able to repair a record number already this year.

“It is a tribute to the hard work of our highways teams that they have been able to respond to this increase in demand.”
